Synopsis
Daoism and Confucianism; these were the two prevalent philosophies which have an influence in Chinese Martial Arts (Wushu). Training and movements all drew inspirations from these philosophies, equipping practitioners with the discipline, perseverance and discipline to train up the internal and external aspects of their bodies; this enables to engage in practices like standing on a pillar with one leg and mediating for hours, as commonly seen in movies, shows and documentaries about martial arts. In short, Wushu used to be very practical - its is very functional in combat. However, there are criticisms that Wushu is becoming too modernized and commercialized; it concentrates on forms and acrobatic feats, which are more aesthetic and hence a more spectacular sight.

Is Wushu beginning to move away from its traditional practices? Are modern practitioners still as conscious about the philosophies which surround their every training move? Are its new practitioners able to appreciate its rich culture? Is it becoming more market-driven?
